| Least I Could Do: Interview |
Here's the interview with Sohmer (writer) and Chad (artist) of LICD.
|
- Pleasantries first; how are you?
Sohmer:
Little gassy
Chad:
doin' good!
- What do you work with? Pens, programs, papers, accessories, female underwear...
Sohmer:
While my side of things aren’t nearly as close to cool as Chad’s are, I use a digital voice recorder to take down ideas, than jot them down into MS word when I get home.
Chad:
I work mostly in Photoshop but I'll go back to the pencil and paper if need be
- Where do you work? Do you have a professional little studio or do you draw sitting on the dinning room table?
Sohmer:
I’ve got an office in my apartment, which is furnished very business like. I can live cluttered, but I need a clean and organized place to work.
Chad:
I work out of my room surrounded by as many toys as possible.
- Where do you find inspiration? You haven't kidnapped a muse, have you?
Sohmer:
Inspiration comes from friends and family mostly, and a couple special people I’m constantly ripping ideas off of from. But mostly, inspiration comes when you least expect it.
And being a little liquored up never hurt the creative process.
Chad:
Inspiration? Many of the women that Rayne hooks up with are women that I know.
- Why did you start originally making LICD?
Sohmer:
I started LICD almost 2 years ago, with an artist called Trevor Adams. It was slow going at first, and for the first 8 or so month, it was a learning process for me. I had no idea what I was doing, and learned mostly by trying, and feedback from our 4 readers at the time.
When Trevor decide to leave the comic, I was lucky enough to find Chad.
I just realized though that I was going a little off topic from the question. I do that that sometimes.
The reasons behind the strip were fairly simple. I’ve had this idea for years, characters and a setting I’ve always wanted to see, though I didn’t know how. With webcomics taking off, I finally found the medium in which I could both showcase my work and learn as I go.
Chad:
I was offered...well, threatened actually...by a mutual friend of ours, Lar DeSouza, who told me this is a gig I ought to be doing.
- Have you made any other comics before LICD?
Sohmer:
I did a wonderful single gag panel with Lar deSouza, one of the most talented artists I’ve ever seen, called ‘In Other News’. We’re on a temporary hiatus at the moment, but I’m counting down the days until we can get that going again.
Chad:
Nope. this is my first true comics gig. I've done occasional 'one shot' cartoons for conventions and stuff, but nothing like this.
- Do you have a comic buffer. Incase something happens, like your computer being eaten by giant ants?
Sohmer:
Yeah, we’re not so much for foreward thinking, or planning. Doing things at the last minute seems to be working for us
Chad:
I usually revert back to drawing up some cheesecake. - for those of you scratching your heads, It's pin-up art of the female persuasion.
- Do you feel that you have improved in the comic's art and story since beginning?
Sohmer:
Hell yes. I’ve still got a ways to go though.
Chad:
Oh good gravy, yes! I look back at what i did a year ago and wish I could go back and re-do it all.
- How long time do you spend on a comic? From the first doodle to us reading and enjoying it on the 'net?
Sohmer:
Takes me a good hour or so to get the script down in a way that I’m pleased, before I send it off to Chad. I’m anal about certain things, dialogue especially, and it takes me a while before I think everything fits in the mouths of the character’s that are speaking.
Chad:
I varies really, depending on what Sohmer want's me to do, where, how many people involved, etc. I can get something done in a couple of hours or a better part of the day.
- Are any of your characters based on real people?
Sohmer:
All the main characters are, and a good portion of the supporting players as well. The main 5 are based on my closest friends that I had growing up.
Chad:
Some are - even through myself in there!
- Are you planning on making more books after this one?
Sohmer:
That we are.
Chad:
Planning? yes! most definitely.
- Rayne's sex life is almost scary, what do you think about it?
Sohmer:
Rayne’s a guy who enjoys life to it’s fullest, and to him, that means having as much sex as he can possibly cram into any 24 hour period. While his morals may be a little skewed, the message of doing what you love is a good one.
That’s right. You heard it here first. I somehow made being a man-whore seem a good thing.
Chad:
It's sad to think that a cartoon character I draw gets more action than I do. ;p
- Is Rayne your favorite character?
Sohmer:
It’s a little narcissistic, but yeah.
Chad:
Hmm...I'd have to say no. I'd have to say Issa is. Only because she lets me play around with her hair. ;)
- Mick seems to have bad luck with the ladies. Is Rayne really inconsiderate and wants to make him suffer a lot by pointing it out to him constantly?
Sohmer:
Rayne definitely belives in tough love, and in his mind, by constantly ragging on Mick, he’s pushing Mick to do better, in this case, with the ladies.
On the other hand, he’s also quite inconsiderate and just enjoys making fun of people. It’s a hobby, really.
Chad:
I think so - I think it also might have something to do with the fact that he scored with the hot swedish chick and Rayne didn't. I notice he got more cruel towards Mick after that.
- Please tell us something about yourself.
Sohmer:
I’m self confident in general, except when it comes to my writing. I’m my own worst critic.
Chad:
Crazy doesn't even begin to cover it.
- Tell us something that we wouldn't understand.
Sohmer:
Being right is sometimes being wrong.
Chad:
I'm a pessimistic optimist.
- Tell us something useless.
Sohmer:
I have misplaced…my pants.
Chad:
"perfect happiness is the absence of happiness" Chuang Tzu
- Have you any interesting addictions? Like cars, movies, shoes, food...
Sohmer:
I’m a huge Lord of the Rings and Star Wars dork. And I’m also with Chad on the Transformers and GI Joe thing.
Chad:
Love cartoons, anything transformers related....I'm a child of the 80's nostalgia.
- Do you go to comic cons?
Sohmer:
Never been to one, but I do want to start hitting them up. I’ve heard nothing but great things from other comic creators.
Chad:
Used to - not as often anymore.
- Read any webcomics? If so, want to share a few with us?
Sohmer:
Very few nowdays, except for the major ones. My favorite comic on the planet right now has to be the syndicates trip, Get Fuzzy. Just brilliant.
Chad:
I read Dandy & Company, PvP, Sabrina online and Spaz Labs.
- Do you have any rivals on the webcomic scene?
Chad:
None that I'm aware of...that I'm not aware of? Oh sure, hundreds.
- Do you by any chance watch anime?
Chad:
Yes. I know enough to get by and I'm one of those people that has to watch it in Japanese with subtitles. Hearing it english just doesn't have the same effect.
- Ever been to KB?
Sohmer:
I have, and enjoyed your other comic spotlights hugely. It was an honor to be asked.
Chad:
Never heard of it, sorry.
- Is there something everyone should know?
Sohmer:
Don’t use 2 condoms at a time.
Chad:
Black cars look better in the shade.
Tequila or vodka?
Sohmer:
Vodka’s more casual, but Tequila is for the ‘I want to drink until I can’t feel my legs’ nights.
Chad:
Neither. Don't drink. buuuuuuut if I had to choose? Vodka. - Tequila bad; this I've learned.
Any famous last words?
Sohmer:
Do what makes you happy.
Chad:
Luck is a very subjective term and cookies should never taste like meat.
